 FULL REVIEW FROM MP3.com

Likko LKM012 SuperMan

Data Dump: It's great to be alive here at MP3.com. Seems like just a short few months ago, we were crying about how all of the much-hyped MP3 CD players were nothing more than a hoax perpetrated by cruel, gadget-dangling pranksters. Now we're consistently getting new and cooler players of this type on a week-by-week basis. It's gonna be one heck of a Christmas. Santa better bring you that CD-R/CD-RW if he knows what's good for him--and you.

We know what you're thinking, though. How are you supposed to choose from the quickly growing number of MP3 CD players you can find on our site? Hey, it's rough for us too, OK? It's like this: When the car was invented, everyone was all, "Cool. Cars are great. Better than horses. Yeah, buy a car." Only as we sample and review more of these will you get a more comparative analysis. As usual, it's up to you--the check-writing, credit card-holding consumer--to decide how much you're willing to pay and for what features and quality.

Here's what we can tell you about this unit:

  • Skip protection is hearty. It's a CD player, so it's bound to skip at some time, but we bounced and shook the snot out it. It advertises 60-second electronic skip protection on the box, but instructions say it has 45-second ESP for MP3 CDs/5-second ESP for regular CDs. Go figure.
  • Playback is very reliable (100% so far) with various burned disks.
  • Like other CD MP3 units, it will only recognize the MP3 files on a CD burned with MP3 and regular audio files.
  • Quirky little feature--using a microphone (not included,) it will record up to 8-1/2 minutes of audio that is deleted once you turn off the player.
  • It can read MP3 files in directories and sub-directories, but navigation is very confusing.
  • Options include repeat, random and programmed playback.
  • It doesn't read ID3 tags like the Pine unit we liked so much.
  • It comes with an AC adapter and two AA rechargeable batteries, but the other accessories--carrying case and headphones--are low quality. The eXpanium has excellent accessories, but is more expensive.
  • Supports VBR and CBR (up to 224kbps) playback.

The bottom line is that the Lenoxx is stable enough, feature-full enough and cheap enough to warrant a solid buy recommendation. We understand there are consumers wary of non-name-brand products out there, but this is good player from a clearly pioneering company.
